Why Children Forget What They Learn in Math (And How to Fix It)

Why Do Children Forget What They Have Learned in Math?

One of the most common concerns we hear from parents is this:

"My child has done this type of question before. The teacher explained it, he got it right then, but now he cannot solve a similar question."

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Many students experience this, especially in PSLE Math where concepts build upon one another and problem-solving skills become increasingly important.

Why Do Children Forget What They Have Learned?

1. Understanding Is Not the Same as Mastery

A child may appear to understand a concept during a lesson because the teacher has explained it clearly. However, understanding a concept once does not mean the child has mastered it.

True mastery happens when a child can independently recognise the concept, apply it in different situations, and explain it confidently to someone else.

2. Corrections Do Not Guarantee Learning

Many parents assume that once a child has completed corrections, the problem is solved.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

When children copy a solution or follow a teacher's explanation, they may understand the steps at that moment. However, unless they actively process the reasoning behind those steps, the learning often remains temporary.

3. Insufficient Practice and Reinforcement

Learning takes time.

Sometimes schools need to move on to the next topic before a child has had sufficient opportunities to practise and strengthen what was taught. As a result, the concept never becomes firmly embedded in long-term memory.

This is especially common when preparing for major examinations such as the PSLE, where there is pressure to cover the syllabus quickly.

The Hidden Problem: Method Memorisation

Many students become good at solving familiar worksheet questions because they recognise a pattern.

However, when the question is presented differently, they struggle.

Why?

Because they have memorised a method rather than understood the underlying concept.

Being able to solve several similar questions does not always mean mastery has been achieved. In many cases, the child is simply applying a "copy-and-paste" approach without truly understanding why the method works.

A Powerful Strategy: The Feynman Technique

One highly effective way to strengthen learning is through the Feynman Technique.

The idea is simple:

After learning a concept, ask your child to become the teacher.

Instead of explaining the concept to them again, ask them to explain it back to you.

Can they explain it clearly?

Can they use simple language?

Can they answer questions about it?

When children teach a concept, they are forced to organise their thoughts and identify gaps in their understanding. This turns them from passive learners into active learners.

Another Effective Strategy: Mix Concepts Into Revision

Rather than practising the same question type repeatedly, include different concepts within a revision paper.

This forces the child to identify:

* What concept is being tested

* Which strategy is appropriate

* How to apply the concept correctly

This process develops the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for PSLE Math success.

The Goal: Concept Mastery, Not Question Memorisation

When children truly understand a concept, they become more confident, more independent, and far less likely to forget what they have learned.

If your child frequently forgets concepts or struggles to apply previously learned methods, it may not be a memory issue. More often, it is a sign that the concept has not yet been fully mastered.
