What Does It Mean to Follow the MOE Math Syllabus?

You often hear schools, tuition centres and assessment books say they “follow the latest MOE Math syllabus.”

But what does that actually mean?

There can be some blind spots when it comes to understanding the MOE Math syllabus in Singapore.

For example, you may sometimes see a problem in a P3 weighted assessment that appears to involve concepts normally associated with P4. You may also encounter difficult prelim questions that are never tested in the PSLE.

So how can parents tell what their child is actually expected to know?

Start with the Math Textbooks

One of the best references is the primary Mathematics textbooks used in Singapore schools. They closely follow the MOE syllabus and show the concepts and suggested methods taught at each level.

However, this does not mean that children must use only the methods shown in the textbooks.

Different methods can be valid as long as the child understands the mathematical concepts and applies them correctly.

What Does “MOE Syllabus Aligned” Really Mean?

Following the MOE Math syllabus is therefore more than covering the correct list of topics.

Good Mathematics teaching should help children:

understand concepts deeply;

use appropriate strategies;

explain their reasoning; and

apply what they know to unfamiliar problems.
